Greetings from the Chairperson

Chairperson Koichi Suzuki
(Internet Initiative Japan Inc.)

The internet, which by integrating communications and computers developed from distinct technological
foundations, has enabled communication that takes computer science as its technical basis, is the greatest
technological innovation of the late 20th century. The progress of the internet, as well as changing the
workings of every society, also serves as the engine of 21st century industry. The word ICT is one that has
arisen from the combination of communications and information. Eventually, all information will exist on the
internet. By integrating communication and information (computers), we are creating an entirely new world.

As is widely known, ICT represents vital infrastructure for daily life and all social and economic
activities. Not only does it hold the key to economic growth, but it also has a significant role to play as
a tool for solving social issues. The government has set a target of 600 trillion yen GDP for 2020, and we
are pushing forward efforts to realize a society that uses and applies IT to the highest world standards by
that year.

In recent years, dramatic leaps forward in ICT, such as Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0, and also including
IoT, Big Data, and AI, have started to make significant changes to the structure of society. ICT is not
simply looking to improve productivity and efficiency. Rather, the use of ICT beyond conventional industry
and business sectors is progressing, creating new services and added value.

In our industry, the MVNO and FVNO markets are expanding rapidly, causing the responsibilities of operators
to grow larger than ever before. As well as a safe and secure communication environment, a greater level of
careful attention to consumers is also being demanded. As well as working through committee activities
towards the “realization of safe and secure networks,” which is one of the association’s visions, we also
work in partnership with related organizations to establish an environment where users can put ICT to use in
safety and peace of mind.

Going forward, we will respond quickly to the rapid changes in the ICT sector, working as one to contribute
steadily to the growth of the ICT industry and to improve the lives of citizens. More than ever, we ask for
your guidance and encouragement in doing so.
